I’m completely befuddled as to where to even begin and how far to go with this one.

This implies ‘religion’ (Christianity) was the reason for the Dark Ages, and that enlightened nonreligious (atheists) are taking the world into some sort of utopia…

I am a little concerned as to what was said here so I am going to try my best to go through it piece by piece.

The median literacy rate in the US today is about 75%, there are sometimes multiple Bibles in households, there are Bibles in hotels (I think still), Bibles at the bookstore, free access to the Bible online, Bible apps…and yet the number of people who don’t know what is in it is probably staggering. So imagine the middle ages, with probably a 20% literacy rate, coupled with the idea that Bibles may not have been as accessible as now…

To be honest, I am not sure what point is being made here. Is there a correlation to literacy and the number of Bibles? or is it suggesting that even fewer people new what was in the Bible in the Medieval Ages, (note my disagreement with the term “Dark Ages”). Either way I am not too sure of how this relates to the topic, perhaps I am simply over looking the point, in which case I was wondering if you might try rephrasing it so that I can understand.

The Protestant Reformation wasn’t until 1517 and the King James Bible was not completed until 1611. So during the dark ages, most everyone who was not a monk depended on corrupt clergy for the Word of God.

Again I feel I am missing the point. Granted the date on the King James Bible seems correct, there were plenty of Bibles before that point. The Bible was compiled during the 4th century, and before that many Churches already possessed these books along with others such as the Didache. In short the Books that make up the Bible were all composed no later that 150 AD (probably closer to around 110 AD but for the sake of argument I will exaggerate to be safe). So once again I do not see the correlation. As for the corrupted clergy, a bit of research will show that it was actually a minority of clergy that were not being orthodox. A great majority of the people then were not being taught by “corrupt clergy.”

Again simply not true. Admitting there were a very small number of clergy behaving against the Church’s teachings. It is not fair, or even sound, to judge an entire group by the actions of a fraction of that group.

If it’s so ridiculous, why not let people see for themselves and laugh with you?

This is alarming for schools are supposed to be places of intrigue and learning. Teaching something that contradicts science and is the weaker (by far) of the other theory (here not stating it is merely a theory in the hypothetical sense) would be an injustice to the students and to our education system. By this same logic, why do we not teach that the moon is made of cheese? or even that the Earth is flat or that it is the center of the universe? The reason is because (especially in elementary and middle school) is that children are very susceptible to that which is around them, and trust their teachers to not lead them astray.

Secondly, atheism is a religion.

No. No it is not. First your “requirements” for what constitutes a religion, would actually exclude real religions (Buddhism for example). Second that list you put forth could be applied to pretty much anything, and is therefore not a very good means for determining what constitutes a religion.
